On December 11, a group of active Razom Think volunteers helped organize protest and expressed their outrage for the recent comment made by FoxNews host Tucker Carlson on air – the comment in favor of Putin and questioning why anyone needs to support Ukraine.
The Ukrainian community (Ukrainians, Ukrainian-Americans, Crimean Tatars, and the friends of all of the aforementioned) is deeply offended and outraged by the public statement made by television personality Tucker Carlson on his November 25th broadcast in which he stated: “Why do I care what’s going on in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? And why shouldn’t I root for Russia, which I am.”
The fact that Carlson later walked back this comment as a “joke” is equally inexcusable. Russia’s naked aggression against Ukraine is no joking matter. Its 2014 invasion of Ukraine’s Donbas region has caused the deaths of 13,000 people, wounded hundreds of thousands and forced more than 1.3 million people from their homes. Carlson’s shameful ignorance and callous disregard for the human cost of this war is appalling. To make matters worse, on December 3rd, Carlson doubled down on his earlier pro-Russian stance and incredibly, asked why Vladimir Putin is so bad.
Fox viewers and American voters are entitled to know about Ukraine’s crucial strategic importance to the United States, its ongoing struggle to maintain its independence and human rights and its resistance to Russian aggression and tyranny.
Big Thank-You to everyone who found time on a busy Wednesday and joined Razom and other Ukrainian organizations in New York for a picket-protest in front of the Fox News building to let Fox News and Tucker Carlson know that Russia is not their friend. Russia is a source of violence and instability in the world and it is unacceptable to even entertain the idea of being on Russia’s side on live television, as Carlson did. We thank everyone who helped us get our voices heard!
