The Pantelyk Fashion Show was a high energy event celebrating Ukrainian culture with the New York community! A young fashion designer Ira Lysa, along with other artist from Ukraine, has developed a project that promotes contemporary Ukrainian art. We were excited to share this art with the New York community.
A Ukrainian phrase “zbyty z pantelyku” (to deceive, to confuse) is taken as a symbolic base. However, there is nothing deceitful or confusing about the beauty of ethnic Ukrainian fashion.
“Pantelyk” utilizes a fashion-show format with a video installation by Volodymyr Stetskovych and music composed by Myroslav Trofymuk. This art project is Ira Lysa’s attempt to create clothing that uses the weaving style of Teresa Barabash with fabrics of various texture, color and structure – it’s a play of form, volume and cuts. Clothing from this collection invokes the Ukrainian folk tradition. These images are complemented by the ceramic jewelry accessories of Bohdan Kukharskyi.
“Pantelyk” is a sort of artistic journey that explores an alternative interpretation of the Ukrainian folk art for contemporary life. It represents the fusion of various elements: Ukrainian culture, contemporary art and current fashion trends. It’s an attempt to create high-quality products with individual touch, which can be opposed to mass and superficial culture. The designer and the artists collaborating on this project are used to non-conformity in both life and creativity. Their art is courageous, honest, provocative, but by no means kitschy.
