Razom is partnering with the PROTOTYPE Festival’s American premiere presentation of Chornobyldorf, amplifying the voices of Ukraine in the US, taking place January 10-21, 2024 at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City. The story centers on survivors in a post-societal world attempt to recreate lost civilization amidst nuclear power plant ruins and abandoned theaters. Descendants of humanity, surviving disasters, engage in archaeological performance-rituals, using universal symbols. Witness the misinterpretation of signs that gradually dissolve into the white noise of nature. The opera was created in 2020 with a series of video-archaeological expeditions through post-industrial Ukrainian landscapes. After February 2022, during the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, all Chornobyldorf landscapes became a “theatre of war,” carrying traces and evidence of occupation and war crimes (Chornobyl exclusion zone, Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in South Ukraine).
